Thirty Years On Two Wheels A Biking Odyssey Julie Hatfield Timothy Leland 9781523351343 Books

In 1983, when a friend at a party mentioned she had just returned from a bike trip in Europe –“the best trip of my life” -- Tim Leland and his wife Julie Hatfield were intrigued. Two weeks later they signed on for a guided bicycle trip to Bordeaux. So began a 30-year biking odyssey that took these two Boston Globe writers to eight countries on twelve different tours. The Globe travel section chronicled their experiences each time they went. This funny, beautifully descriptive book -- based on those articles -- captures everything unique about the joys of traveling on two wheels in foreign lands the fragrances, the tastes, the sights, the sounds. You will fall in love, as they did, with the idea of slow travel down tiny vineyard lanes, far removed from the air-conditioned tour buses that keep you away from the real thing.

If biking through Europe would make you as handsome as this pair, the sore calf muscles would be worth it. Their photography is exquisite, always making the sites accessible. The writing is comfortable and comes in lovely little packages, just right for that last little sliver of time before you finally turn out the light.Product details

Thirty Years On Two Wheels A Biking Odyssey Julie Hatfield Timothy Leland 9781523351343 Books Reviews
A truly enjoyable, beautifully written, travel adventure. It's the closest you'll come to being there , yourself.
And, if you read this book, you'll wish you were there, too.

I've known Tim Leland since Columbia Graduate School of Journalism when we were classmates. We both ended up at The Boston Globe where Tim designed and executed the "Spotlight" investigative team that has won a half dozen Pulitzer Prizes (followed by an Oscar for best picture in 2016!). He is a superb writer who did pioneering work year after year at the Globe, a happy memory for both of us. OK, I also helped him with this book by suggesting he use CreateSpace to publish it, as I did with "Family Matters", my pale attempt to write a Catholic kid's version of of Tobias Wolfe's masterpiece "This Boy's Life." Unlike Me (and Wolfe) Tim Leland has lived a charmed life, and you'll get a slice of it here. Check it out!
I loved this book! So much fun and gives me a mini-vacation every time I pick it up. I think I've gained 5 pounds just reading about the food!
Such a delight to follow the biking adventures of this engaging couple. Their destinations and descriptions made me want to check my passport and book a flight. I loved all the details of the locales, but especially the gastronomic masterpieces that were their meals on these European tours! A fun read.
The couple's series of cycling holidays, all but one in Europe, are recounted vividly and lovingly. The accounts of the wine and food they savored make the reader's mouth water, and the descriptions of the lovely countryside are humorously seasoned with tales of navigational errors and sweaty hill-climbs. Disclosure The husband and I were college classmates, but our paths have not crossed in the years since then.
